WHY HONG KONG, WHY NOW? (April 6, 2006)

At a speaker luncheon held Thursday, April 6, 2006 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, Jack Maisano, President, American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, discussed on business environment in Hong Kong and how U.S. companies are doing there. This event was jointly organized by the Hong Kong Association of Southern California and Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office, San Francisco, and supported by other trade organizations.

In addition to overviewing the known advantages of Hong Kong such as its reliable legal system, freely convertible currency, well regulated banks and securities markets, 21st century infrastructure, Jack Maisano also shared the unique characteristic of how Hong Kong continues to thrive in adversity both internally and externally. As the China market is opening up more and more, Hong Kong is no longer an island but will continue to prosper with its fastest growing motherland in the global marketplace.

A Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Jack Maisano by Doris Cheung, director of the Hong Kong Economic Trade Office in San Francisco (right) and Raymond Cheng, president of the Hong Kong Association of Southern California.

Jack Maisano closed his presentation by quoting the words from James Baker, a former U.S. Secretary of State, "Hong Kong's compelling values of the rule of law, and economic opportunity - championed by its able, energetic and persistent people - can (and I think will) influence China's future development in a clear and positive way."

The American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong (AmCham) is one of the largest American Chambers outside the US, the largest international chamber in Hong Kong and the most dynamic and influential international business organization in the Asia-Pacific region. Its mission is to foster commerce among the United States of America, Hong Kong and Mainland China, and to enhance Hong Kong's stature as an international business center.

Jack Maisano was appointed as the President of AmCham on March 1, 2005. Since 2002, Jack has been the President of China Institute in America, a New York-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to bringing an appreciation of Chinese culture to people in America through an understanding of Chinese culture to people in America. Also in New York, Jack was publisher of The Asian Wall Street Journal Weekly edition, a Dow Jones publication going to American investors focused on Asia.
